Starting secondary school is a big change
We know that starting at secondary school or high school is seen as a key right of passage for children, it is also one of the most important transitions in a child’s educational career, one which if it doesn’t go well impacts not only academic capability but also their mental health.
We want to be able to support parents and students to make this transition as smooth as possible.
This practical talk looks at the both parent and student worries about this transition. It gives techniques that help manage the wobbles, looks at making friends and has lots of practical hints and tips to make the transition as smooth as possible.
After the talk year 6 students told us:
• They felt less worried (30%)
• They felt less anxious (16.2%)
• They felt less nervous (32.4%)
• They felt more prepared (41%)
• They had less questions (19%)
When we asked parents who attended the workshop they told us:
98% felt the workshop was useful for their child to attend.
100% would recommend it to another parent
When we asked why they would recommend it, parents told us:
“This should be mandatory for all parents / carers to attend, so useful”
“It was clear and informative about what to expect”.
“It gave us things to think about we hadn’t thought of”.
“Digestible information and resources”
“The workshop was very informative, My son is definitely feeling calmer about his transition and cannot wait for next week.”
